The Smile of God

July 23, 2009

The words almost immediately came to mind when I read another passage of Scripture:

The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace (Numbers 6:24-26, ESV).

The passage of Scripture I was reading when the above came to mind?  Jeremiah 18:17–

Like the east wind I will scatter them before the enemy. I will show them my back, not my face, in the day of their calamity.

So tragically far down the road of their sinful choices, so fatally far from their God:  this is Judah in the late 7th century BC.

God will no longer look down upon her with favor.  Instead of his face, they will now see His back.

Think of the rejection/frustration you feel when someone you wish to talk with turns away from you.  And all you see as they walk away is their back.

Is that what I want to experience of God today?  (You say a Christian can’t feel something of this today?  Read Hebrews 12:5-11).

No!  I will live for Him today.  I will be filled with His Spirit today.

Because life cannot be better than when the smile of God is upon me today.
