First Steps to Heaven

July 21, 2010

Perhaps we have watered down the Bible’s teaching on the new birth.  Perhaps this explains the wide-spread power outages across the North American church landscape.  Perhaps we do not take to heart deeply the words “Make every effort to . . .  be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”

Consider the following words.  Do they not speak of a much different gospel than the one being proclaimed by many today?

Despair of ever being saved, “except thou be born again,’ or of seeing God “without holiness,” or of having part in Christ except thou “love Him above father, mother, or thy own life.”  This kind of despair is one of the first steps to heaven (emphasis mine).

Richard Baxter, 17th century English Christian
