Do You Tremble?

January 21, 2011

Did not know this:

“Paul is the only New Testament author to use the expression ‘with fear and trembling’ to describe the believer’s reaction to being part of God’s great salvation. He uses this expression in Philippians 2:12 and Ephesians 6:5 in connection with the believer’s obedience, and in 1 Corinthians 2:3 to describe his own attitude in preaching the gospel. If obedience is the action that grows from the gospel having taken root, then ‘fear and trembling’ is its corresponding attitude. Those who recognize that obedience is the fruit of genuine faith do not take sin lightly. Faced with God’s judgment (cf. [2 Cor.] 5:9-10), perseverance in faith is a matter of life and death.”

Scott Hafemann, 2 Corinthians (NIVAC), v. 315.

Isa 66:1-2 (ESV):  Thus says the LORD: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what is the house that you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest?  All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.
