Why Not Irresistible Grace?

February 7, 2011

“All that the Father gives me will come to me . . . . No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day” (John 6:37, 44).

Some don’t like the idea of the Biblical teaching that, when it comes to the salvation of God’s chosen children His grace is irresistible. He will infallibly bring to himself, through the preaching of the gospel, all the elect.

Perhaps you’ve received the teaching a bit skewed in its presentation.

W.G.T. Shedd is helpful here in his Dogmatic Theology when he writes “the grace of God manifested in the purpose of election is irresistible; not in the sense that it cannot be opposed in any degree, but in the sense that it cannot be overcome.”
