Richard Mouw on “Love Wins”

March 15, 2011

Dr. Richard Mouw is the President of Fuller Theological Seminary, the largest (so-called) Protestant seminary in the world. Oddly enough, it is also where both John Piper and Rob Bell received graduate degrees.

Not much stuns me anymore, but I had not realized the degree to which Mouw has shifted on the Gospel, as shown in this quote from an on-line article in USA Today:

Richard Mouw, president of the world’s largest Protestant seminary, Fuller Theological Seminary based in Pasadena, Calif., calls Love Wins “a great book, well within the bounds of orthodox Christianity and passionate about Jesus.”

The real hellacious fight, says Mouw, a friend of Bell, a Fuller graduate, is between “generous orthodoxy and stingy orthodoxy. There are stingy people who just want to consign many others to hell and only a few to heaven and take delight in the idea. But Rob Bell allows for a lot of mystery in how Jesus reaches people.”

I just started reading Galatians today and am reminded that there is only one gospel (Gal 1:6-7). We cannot have many different versions or “stories” of Christianity and pick the flavor of the day. And sadly, yet truly, the one Paul proclaimed, taught and believed says this: “The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life” (Gal. 6:8). [Note the parallelism carefully – on one hand there is eternal life to be reaped; thus the destruction Paul speaks of must also be eternal as well].

Paul was one of those stingy people who loved people enough warn them of the error of their sowing ways if they continued to live according to the flesh and not bow the knee to Jesus. We must be as well.

I watched a small part of an interview with Rob Bell on “Good Morning America” this morning, and I kept thinking about “false teachers will say what their itching ears want to hear….” That is why I’m such a ‘narrow minded, supersticious, imbecile’.These so-called experts are the wolf in sheeps clothing Jesus warned us about,it’s so obvious to me ; I’m sure it will be a best-seller and many “churches” will consider it a companion to the Bible, only to fill up seats.
